Background

In its 2022 election commitment, the South Australian Government pledged to “develop and introduce legislation to enshrine how the arts are valued and led in South Australia.”

Introducing legislation that enshrines the value of the arts presents an opportunity for the South Australian Government to demonstrate its commitment to arts, culture and creative industries.

The Bill will articulate the value of the arts, cultural and creative industries to the state through:

  • highlighting South Australia’s defining strengths, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture, our reputation for excellence in youth arts, our interconnectedness and our ideal festival city characteristics
  • delivering well-being, social and economic benefits to all South Australians
  • ensuring that South Australia remains a place that offers freedom of artistic expression and supports creative innovation and artistic excellence.

Enshrining the value of the arts into legislation will also ensure future governments continue to demonstrate commitment to the arts, cultural and creative industries.
