South Australia’s identity as a UNESCO City of Music is deeply connected to its vibrant live music culture. Dedicated live music venues play a vital role in this ecosystem, providing opportunities for artists to perform, build audiences and contribute to the cultural life and liveability of our communities.

Through consultation for its new strategy, A Sound Future, the MDO heard directly about the increasing pressures facing live music venues and in response has established the Venues Activation Program (VAP) to strengthen the sustainability and business capacity of dedicated live music venues with a capacity of up to 700 people.

The program will be delivered over two rounds:

  • Round 1 (August 2026): Grants of up to $40,000 to support the presentation of original live music. A select number of successful applicants will also have access to a professional development opportunity delivered by Access2Arts.
  • Round 2 (August 2027): Funding will prioritise infrastructure and/or other measures that increase venue accessibility.

Applications will be assessed through a competitive process, with funding recommendations made by a panel of industry representatives.

Round 1 of the Venues Activation Program will invest up to $500,000 in South Australia’s live music industry, supporting a thriving sector now and into the future.
